Bucks County Trout Unlimited

Hello Bucks TU,

I hope everyone is having a great summer and you all are looking forward to some cooler, trout-fishing friendly weather. We have a great fall line up of speakers to get you into the fishing mood and to start it off we bring back an old friend of the chapter. On Thursday, September 2nd at 7:00pm at the Bucks County Fish & Game Clubhouse we give the floor to Dr. Bob Bachman.

Dr. Bachman retired from state government on April 1, 1999 after thirteen years of service with the state of Maryland in a number of fish-and-game-related positions including: Director of Fisheries (inland and marine), Director of Fish and Wildlife and Chief of Freshwater Fisheries. Throughout this period he supervised, among other things, Maryland's coldwater fishery and in such capacity was instrumental in establishing environmental and regulatory changes resulting in the creation of four nationally-recognized trout fisheries. During this period he served on a number of inter-state agencies including the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, President of both the Northeastern and Southeastern Associations of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

He holds a doctorate in behavioral ecology from the Pennsylvania State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine and Electrical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy. His pioneering behavioral study of brown trout at the Pennsylvania State University won him the American Fisheries Society's "Best Paper Award" and has been widely cited in professional papers, magazine articles, and national publications such as the New York Times and Newsweek. His 1985 article "How Trout Feed" in the Winter Issue of Trout won him the C.E. Orvis award "Best published how-to fly fishing magazine story".

Bob currently serves on the Board of Commissioners of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission as commissioner from District 6. He also serves as board member of the Pennsylvania Flyfishing Museum Association, the Cocalico Creek Watershed Association, the Lehigh Coldwater Fishery Alliance, Friends of the Upper Delaware and is a member of the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He confesses to be an obsessive fisherman with a strong predilection for flyfishing.

Bob plans to include in his remarks and presentation some important things that are taking place within the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Delaware River trout fishery, the Lehigh River, the Susquehanna River and Marcellus Shale. Included are some things the Commission is working on with regard to the updated trout management plan and some management concepts that should be of interest to all of us .

Come on out and enjoy a very informative, yet always highly entertaining evening with Dr. Bob. Hope to see you there.

Ed Harrington
